Before the tournament even started Dean Rojas thought that he could come to Toledo Bend and sight fish his way to a victory. So when practice got underway that was what Dean set out to do, see if he could put together a sight fishing pattern that would allow him to hold that blue Elite trophy over his head and claim the win when it was all done.
Dean soon learned during his three days of practice that a good number of quality bass were still spawning and on the beds in weedy areas that were located by primary or secondary points off of the main lake.
Rojas started the tournament strong in catching a limit sight fishing his newest Big Bite signature bait the WarMouth, rigged a 4/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook, and fished on 22lb Sunline Shooter Fluorocarbon line. As the day went on Dean switched to a Spro Hydro-Pop, a topwater bait in shad color that he fished on 14lb Sunline Super Natural Mono Line. Between these two presentations; Dean brought 23-01lbs to the stage, claiming first place.
Day two and three pretty much followed suit Dean worked his sight fishing one, two punch and mounted a 4 pound lead over second place David Walker heading into the last day.
Rojas caught his biggest bass of the last day a 5 1/2-pounder on his Hydro-Pop in the morning. For the rest of the day Dean worked on sight fishing his WarMouth to fill out his limit and catch a key upgrade late in the day to come in with 13-08lbs.
Dean started the last day with David Walker 4lbs behind him but the greatest charge that last day came from Gerald Swindle. When all the fish were weighted Dean came out on top by a one ounce margin to claim the wire to wire win.
The win is Dean’s fourth at the tour level; his second on Toledo Bend. This win not only gave Dean a $100,000 payday, he is now qualified for the 2012 Bassmaster Classic. He also gained valuable Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year points to move from 31st to 8th.
Congratulations Dean from all of us at Big Bite Bait on your Bayou victory.
